Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Link Between Abusive Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Need For Coping Skills Training

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics reveal that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? More than a few alcohol dependency experts claim that wine, beer, and liquor advertisements produced by the media are a key reason for the escalation of teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol dependency consultants declare that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of beer, wine, and liquor in our society. Still other alcohol abuse experts affirm that more than a few of our teenagers get involved in alcohol abuse because of the increased anxiety that they feel.

From a somewhat different viewpoint, since both parents in quite a few families are gainfully employed, the lack of parental guidance surely has to play a significant part in the rise in teenage alcohol abuse. And lastly, diverse alcohol dependency experts declare that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due, in some measure, to our lenient society.

One aspect of teenage alcohol abuse that looks as if it somewhat incomplete in the alcohol abuse research results, on the other hand, is the lack of educational programs that teach students how to enhance their coping skills so that their abusive and hazardous drinking behavior is radically lessened or eliminated. Stated more precisely, science has demonstrated that there is an indirect association between poor coping skills and unhealthy drinking.

Essentially, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the greater the rate of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a valid argument, why isn't coping skills training an essential part of the academic curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

Let us manufacture a scenario for the purpose of clarification. Let us imagine a society in which students are taught how to develop sound coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets demanding, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more creative manner, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to implement their coping skills.

Stated differently, students who demonstrate good coping skills will be more able to think proactively and display top-shelf decision making as opposed to teens lack top quality coping skills, gravitate to the "quick fix" of alcohol abuse.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, additionally, if teens not only received top quality coping skills instruction but also obtained a first-rate education that stressed the short term and long term negative results associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills instruction, it is advocated, would help students stay away from the apparent allure of teen drinking and, as a consequence, would significantly decrease the injurious drinking behavior displayed by teenagers in our country.

There are evidently many valid reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in an abusive manner. Such a complex problem demands a broad based and more applicable response by our educators, students, parents, and politicians so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more productive and responsible way rather than resorting to careless and abusive drinking to solve their difficulties.
