A Physical Education And Health Instructor Instructs Her Students About The Importance Of Alcoholism Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most financially challenged co-educational high school in the district. Although she had been teaching for only two years, she had already established a reputation as an instructor with instructional methods that stimulated and encouraged students to learn and to think.
As an illustration, one Friday afternoon she addressed the students in her class and said the following: "For the next week we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based standpoint and we are also going to learn about several of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more detailed point of view."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely show that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcohol addicted individual, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the greater the probability that she or he is an alcohol addicted individual."
Miss Jackson then informed the class that each student would be responsible for studying three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the rest of the class by way of a twenty-five minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to go over the list and rank the top nine alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After approximately five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and informed the pupils in her class that after she assesses the numbers, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked her students to look over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any issues, questions, or concerns. Within 20 or 30 seconds, virtually every pupil in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was noticeable that the students had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. As an illustration, virtually every person in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, to be exact, "Do you feel really ill when you stop drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told the students in her classroom why this answer was the most unambiguous indicator of alcohol dependency. She underscored the fact that the primary difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
Basically this means that when an alcohol addicted individual abruptly stops drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to grasp the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson knew that she had motivated and encouraged the students in her class to stop and think about an essential social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
