Just a few days ago, Ryan applied for a job as a bouncer at one of the local nightclubs. He had studied karate, gatka, ninjitsu, aikido, and judo for five years; he was a personal trainer; he took daily minerals, supplements, and vitamins; he was into health foods and healthy eating; and he seemed well suited for such a job. When Ryan received notification that he had been selected for the job, he was extremely delighted. Due to the fact that this was a special nightclub, however, he had to go through a three week training class.
On the first day of class, the instructor started talking about people who drink in a hazardous manner and what the bouncers, bartenders, and barmaids should do when this situation arises. When the instructor started discussing alcohol poisoning, Ryan was pleased to learn that all of the new employees had to learn about alcohol poisoning and what they should do when they witnessed a drinker who was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms or displaying the signs of alcohol poisoning.
More directly, all the new employees learned that nausea and vomiting were almost always one of the first signs of alcohol poisoning and that unconsciousness was most likely the most highly perceptible alcohol poisoning symptom or sign. The instructor also made it a point to emphasize the fact that alcohol poisoning symptoms were messages from the brain and from the body that the individual had consumed more alcohol than his or her body can metabolize.
There were, however, quite a few other signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning that all the new employees were taught to recognize. For example, the class members learned that people with alcohol poisoning often have seizures, are difficult to awaken, exhibit confusion, and they exhibit poor reflex responses.
Not only this but, the members of the class learned that many people who have alcohol poisoning also manifest slow, shallow or irregular breathing; blue tinged or pale skin; slurred speech; and little response from painful stimuli, for instance from pinching.
To highlight the impact that binge drinking has on alcohol poisoning, the instructor told the class that a person who gets inebriated just once or twice annually is, by definition, engaging in alcohol abuse. Such a person, however, is probably not an alcoholic, but is probably engaging in binge drinking. As articulated by the teacher, engaging in binge drinking even one time, sadly, can result in an alcohol overdose that in some instances can be fatal.
The instructor then told the class that the most appropriate response for an alcohol overdose is the following: if it is assumed that an individual has alcohol poisoning, call 911 and ask for immediate medical assistance, even if the individual is underage. By taking this course of action, the drinker will get the prompt alcohol poisoning treatment she or he requires.
After learning about alcohol poisoning and especially about the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning, it may be pointed out, Ryan felt that he had learned some valuable information that might save a person's life in the future. Unmistakably, Ryan learned that knowledge of the mainstream alcohol poisoning signs and symptoms and knowing how to quickly and properly react to such signs and symptoms (by immediately calling 911 and asking for urgent medical assistance) can help a drinker avoid a fatal case of alcohol poisoning.
